3-5 Years
At 3-5 years old children are generally in the representation phase of visual arts, this is when they are starting to look at an object and is able to define it, as well as understand what context it is in. It is through the activities below that children are learning and developing to meet the components of the EYLF and the ACARA. |
It is an essential key that children read many books before they start primary school has it helps to further their development towards reading and their vocabulary. By reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar book and then performing activities afterwards it helps children to communicate their thoughts that they gained from the book as well as help promote their own identities.
Responding:
This activity requires the teacher to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar book to the children. The children will need to interrupt their favourite part of the book and make a collage of it, out of any material that they require.
Relation to the EYLF & ACARA:
This activity aims to focus on working towards all the learning outcomes from the EYLF. Not all of the outcomes will be made competent through just on activity. However this can be a starting point. When children are engaging in this activity they have the ability to express themselves, it is a good stress relief, a great way for children to communicate their thoughts as well as outlining their own identity. In relation to the ACARA this activity is promoting dot point 1, 2 and 3 on the home screen page, this is evident as children are having the opportunity to learn on their own two feet, as well as having the opportunity to use new emerging skills.
Materials:
-A range of different materials (non- toxic paint, textures, pencils, glue, string etc.)
-Large pieces of paper for all children
-The Very Hungry Caterpillar book
-Water and towels to clean up
Method:
-Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar book to the children
-Have a discussion with them once it is done, exploring their imaginations within the book
-Give each child one large piece of paper to express their knowledge
-Allow a large amount of time for this task
-Make sure as a teacher try and allow for all sorts of material the children want
-Once completed hang up to dry
Teaching Tips:
Make sure the discussion is kept simple for all the children once the book is read. Engage with all the children while they are undertaking the task to allow them to open up their imagination even further. If this task begins to get messy or out of control, reduce the amount of material the children are allowed to use.

Creating:
This activity requires the teacher to draw a large outline of each of the children's bodies. The children then have the opportunity to fill the inner body in with whatever they want (which allows the children to express themselves and their perception of their identity) using any material that they wish.

This activity aims to focus on working towards all the learning outcomes from the EYLF. Not all of the outcomes will be made competent through just on activity. However this can be a starting point. In relation to the ACARA this activity is promoting dot point 1, 2 and 3 on the home screen page, this is evident as children are having the opportunity to discover themselves and the concepts that many come with it.
Materials:
-One large outline of each child's body
-All artistic material on hand so that the children can use whatever they want (non- toxic paint, textures, paper etc.)
-Water and towels for cleaning up
Method:
-Lay each child down on the ground and draw an outline of each child's body
-Give the paper to the children and discuss the task on hand
-Allow every child any material they want (if you have it)
-Make sure there is a large amount of time dedicated to this task
-Once each child is done, hang it up and allow for it to dry
Teaching tips:
Make sure there is a large amount of time set aside for this task, as it allows the children to communication and explore the way in which they see themselves. If a child seems to be struggling engage with them and explore together what they might want to do on it. If things being to get messy or children are struggling remove the materials and task, and do one as a group.
