0-2 Years
For children that are within the age bracket of 0-2 years often they are in the manipulative phase of visual arts, it is during this stage that children begin to scribble but don't understand that pencils can do what they want them to do. During this stage children are just at the beginning of developing their fine and gross motor skills, as a result teachers need to keep everything simple.

Large amount of research has suggested that children need to read up to 1000 books before they begin primary school as it helps to promote learning within a child's vocabulary. By reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, it allows for the children to be exposed to a information book however in simple formation. Once the children have read the book they have to perform different activities, as it helps to promote the child to communicate their own learning as well as help promote their own identity from an early age.
Responding:
This activity requires the teacher to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the children. After this is done then the children working alongside the teacher need to identify colours, shapes and numbers within the book. Once that is complete the children will be left to their own devices to investigate shapes and the way they feel.
Relation to the EYLF & ACARA:
This activity aims to focus on learning outcome 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the EYLF. This activity promotes this as it is allowing children to engage and influence their own learning as well as the children connecting to the environment that surrounds them. This activity also links to the EYLF as, children can express their own feelings and identity. In relation to the ACARA this activity is promoting dot point 1 and 2 on the home screen page, this is evident as children are having the opportunity to learn on their own two feet.
Materials:
-The very hungry caterpillar book
-Cut outs of shapes for the children in different colours
Method:
-Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the children
-Identify with the children the shapes and what counting aspects the book has
-Count in the book with the children
-Place all the different shape cut outs on the ground and watch what the children do with them
Teaching Tips:
It is very important within this age to keep everything very simple. Make sure all children are engaged so that they can extend their own learning. Allow all the children to say what they want to say about the book. If the three contexts within the book are to much,by reduce too just focusing on one.
